People’s attitudes toward fur clothing have changed significantly in recent years due to pressures from anti-fur activists, which have led some brands to abandon natural fur. However, the fur industry has become increasingly transparent about its practices, and certifications for farmers and retailers have emerged.
Currently, according to WRAP, the average lifespan of a garment is 2.2 years, and the fast-fashion phenomenon is growing more prevalent. Contrary to the trend in fashion to create disposable goods, natural furs can be reshaped, restyled, and altered, allowing a natural fur coat to be worn for decades if cared for properly. Through restyling and cleaning, a natural fur garment can be given new life, adding another ten years to its lifespan, as wear and tear on a fur vest or coat is generally “moral” rather than physical when it’s considered out of style.
Activists should consider this aspect, as natural fur is the sustainable choice compared to polluting plastic alternatives.
