How to Store a Fur Coat in the Summer

With summer’s arrival, we’re always happy to switch to sandals and airy dresses, but this doesn’t mean we should forget about our fur garments. A natural fur coat is a durable item, and when it’s of high quality and well-crafted, it should last at least 20 years. However, if you want to keep it in good condition, you must be mindful of how you store it during the summer.

Where should it be stored?

The fur coat is best stored in cool places, with ideal preservation conditions between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. You may not be able to provide these conditions at home, but try to keep it in a dark place, away from sunlight. High humidity is also harmful to the leather; it should be between 50-55%, so avoid storing your fur coat in a basement, a closet on the balcony, or a room with very low humidity.

Direct light exposure can damage its color, especially if it’s a dyed fur coat. Avoid keeping it in an open wardrobe exposed to direct sunlight, especially if made of cedar. Cedar is commonly used in wardrobe construction, but this wood absorbs a significant amount of moisture. If you store your fur in a cedar closet, it will draw moisture out of the leather, causing it to dry out. Additionally, the fur may absorb the cedar smell.

How should it be stored?

An important point to remember is not to put the coat in a plastic bag. Fur is a natural product and doesn’t harmonize well with plastic materials. When you store it in a plastic cover, it can’t breathe. We generally don’t recommend using bags for storing a fur coat; it’s much better to leave the coat uncovered in the closet, without a cover that could wear down the fur, and save the fabric bag only for transport. Even when transporting it, avoid using plastic protection.

If you want your fur coat to retain its shape, use a wide hanger that can support the full weight of the coat. Avoid keeping it in a crowded closet, as it may become deformed or wrinkled, and the fur may wear down when pressed by other garments. To protect it from moths, use a special spray (we recommend SANO K 600, which can be found in any hypermarket); moth sachets hung on the hanger are not as effective, especially for long coats. They only protect the top area where they’re fixed, leaving the coat’s hem exposed. Using an anti-moth spray will protect both your fur coats and vests, as well as other wool and cashmere items in your closet. Also, the fur coat should have enough space on the wardrobe or closet bar to avoid wrinkling. We recommend a minimum distance of 10 cm between hangers, with an ideal distance of 15 cm if space allows.

To keep them free from dust, ideally, cover all winter clothes with a thin cotton sheet placed over the hanger bar.

A fur coat is a valuable item that should be properly cared for if you want to extend its lifespan. Store it according to these guidelines, and apply a proper cleaning at the beginning of the season. We recommend bringing your fur coat to our store for a specialized Fur SPA cleaning treatment.
