A Passion for Furs, Now in Its Third Generation

My name is Bianca Mărgărit, and I work in the luxury natural fur industry. I represent the third generation in a family that has dedicated its entire life to this passion.

Our story began in 1939 when my grandfather, Ion Mărgărit, left his village and came to live with his sister in Bucharest. His sister was married to a furrier, and Ion Mărgărit came to learn the trade, as was customary at the time.

At just 14 years old, he began as an apprentice, and in 1943, at the age of 18, he became a master furrier. The whole family was involved in what we now call the fashion business – his sisters and in-laws were either furriers or luxury tailors. Back then, young apprentices, known as “shop boys,” would work for years unpaid or for a symbolic wage, often receiving only food and a place to sleep in exchange for learning the trade.

Much later, my grandfather met Ileana Mărgărit, my grandmother, whom he taught the noble secrets of the furrier’s trade. During communism, my grandmother worked for two and a half years in Frankfurt, alongside some of the best Romanian furriers who had emigrated to Germany. At the time, Frankfurt was considered the fur capital of the world. Throughout her life, my grandmother crafted luxury furs for the most important people of her era. Because she insisted on impeccable quality, clients would book in advance and wait up to two years for their coats to be ready.

Out of respect for our clients, we never reveal their identities, but some of Romania’s most prominent personalities have sought our services.

In 1992, my father, Daniel Mărgărit, began working with my grandmother at her home. Two years later, they opened their first atelier, catering to a select clientele – ladies who had trusted my grandmother for a lifetime. Production increased, and they started working with two other colleagues to fulfill all orders.

Around this time, our late associate Mihai Gerota, who was involved in international fur trade and had strong connections with hundreds of ateliers in Italy and Germany, introduced my father to European working styles and techniques. After visiting numerous ateliers, Daniel adopted Italian techniques and implemented them as the standard in what would later become Casa de blănuri MG – a name derived from Mărgărit and Gerota. In 1997, the atelier and store opened at Ștefan cel Mare no. 46, where we have been located ever since.

“Casa de blănuri” is not just a name but a concept invented by our family: a place where you don’t simply buy a fur coat. It’s a place where you can order the coat of your dreams, a bespoke piece tailored to your lifestyle, tastes, and personal style. It’s a place where you can create a one-of-a-kind garment. You can adjust a purchased coat to fit your body perfectly, or breathe new life into a forgotten coat whose style or size no longer suits you.

Essentially, a Casa de blănuri must guarantee the quality of the coat you purchase, using carefully selected raw materials and components with the expertise of a specialist, and impeccable craftsmanship. At the same time, it should offer warranty and post-warranty services, performed quickly and to a high standard of quality.

Our family heritage, dedication to crafting each coat, and the attention we give each client have always kept us at the top, making us more than just an atelier or fur store – we are Casa de blănuri MG.
