    Why Russian sable

Ultra-light, very warm, with an unmistakable touch. A Russian sable coat
offers effortless elegance and refinement, appreciated by true connoisseurs. It’s the kind of fur
that becomes addictive once you wear it – after sable, you’ll hardly want anything else. It’s the
preferred choice for evening looks, but also for discreet “day-to-night” appearances.

Pay close attention to fur quality, authenticity and workmanship: visual differences between grades and
lots are significant; we guide you through them in the showroom.

    Cut & fit

Straight – focus on the material and fluidity; universally wearable.
A-line – gentle flare for natural movement, creating the impression of the fur “dancing”.
Fitted – defines the waist and maximises elegance; requires precise adjustments at the waist.

Key details: pelt placement, collar height (shawl/stand-up), body shape, careful colour sorting of the pelts.

    Shades & selection

Russian sable can be farmed or wild. Wild sable is classified by region of origin:
    Eniseisky, Amursky, Jakutsky, Kamchatsky
and Barguzinsky, the latter being the most precious. Certain models are suitable only
for certain categories of sable, because fur length and pelt size differ.

As a wild-origin fur, Russian sable often needs chromatic fine-tuning, pelt by pelt, to match within a
garment. Only top Italian tanneries can achieve this level. Tanning is crucial for sable quality. Depending
on hair structure, sable pelts can range in price on a scale from 1 to 8 (1 being the weakest quality –
while premium pelts can be up to eight times more expensive).

Russian sable is the pinnacle of fur quality: it offers unmatched thermal comfort, is light to wear,
dense but not bulky, and highly durable.

The “soft gold” of the North – a bit of history

As early as the Middle Ages, because sable fur was extremely rare and came from hard-to-reach regions,
and to prevent prices from spiralling out of control, the right to wear sable was for a time reserved
only for crowned heads – kings, dukes, tsars. Barguzinsky sable, in the late imperial
period, was destined exclusively for the tsar and his family, and sable skins were used as a form of
currency, called the “soft gold” of the North – the most valuable portable form of wealth.

Old Russian chronicles and medieval Arab sources explicitly mention the sable fur trade — values were
calculated “in sable heads”, as units of account. From the 14th–15th centuries onwards, as Muscovy
expanded into Siberia, the Russian state implemented the yasak system: an annual tribute in furs, with
sable as the most coveted species. Skins were collected, labelled and sent directly to Moscow, to the
tsar’s treasury, used as diplomatic gifts and sold in Europe at exorbitant prices.

By the 17th century, sable became a state monopoly. The tsar offered sable garments as diplomatic gifts,
the ultimate sign of honour and power. The “soft gold” of the North became a symbol of the elite and the
    benchmark of absolute luxury.

Today, Casa de Blanuri MG continues this heritage: not only through luxury, but through respect for
history and craftsmanship. Every MG sable piece carries the same meaning — genuine value, rarity and
    timeless elegance.

Shades and grades – Lavender, Tortora, Cashmere, Dark, Silvery

Lavender – the lightest shades, beige with subtle lavender-violet tones, a modern and bold choice.
Tortora – a warm taupe “coffee with milk” tone, the next step after Lavender.
Cashmere – a warm chocolate hue, sophisticated and timeless.
Dark – the deepest shade, a dark roast coffee tone, equally classic.

Sable is also defined by its Silvery characteristic (grade 0–6), given by the presence
of white guard hairs. Depending on the grade, the price can double, triple or more. From
Silvery 0 (no white hairs) to Silvery 6 (the rarest and most precious,
with many white hairs that give a special sparkle), we are talking about the top of Russian sable quality.
Sable can also be toned / dyed / bleached, covering a wide colour palette.

We look carefully at fur density and sheen, colour uniformity, pelt sorting within the garment and pelt
placement to achieve a perfect visual effect.

    Be careful about authenticity

Very often, retailers sell Baum marten (pine marten) or Canadian sable as Russian sable. To an
untrained eye they can look similar. Some sellers do this deliberately, others because they themselves
cannot tell the difference between the three types of fur, let alone between the various categories and
qualities of Russian sable. This is why sable coats should only be bought from
specialised, trustworthy retailers who can show you the differences in a concrete way.

On the market you’ll see “Russian sable” jackets with similar designs and comparable fur consumption,
with prices starting around ~€3,500 (for marten) and going up to ~€30,000 for high-quality Barguzinsky
Silvery 6 sable. The difference lies in the fur quality and the workmanship.

Sable coat vs. mink, fox, lynx, chinchilla

Compared to mink, Russian sable is lighter, with an unmistakable touch – the softest
fur that still has guard hair. It offers good resistance to wear and tearing, but requires advanced
knowledge and specialisation in manufacturing – execution must be impeccable.

Versus fox, sable focuses on refinement and fluidity rather than volume. Compared to lynx, where the
natural pattern is the main focus, sable impresses through uniformity and subtle glow. Versus chinchilla,
sable is more robust for frequent wear, while still keeping that soft, plush luxury feel.

Styling – how to showcase sable

    • Midi jacket + simple dress: let the fur be the main accent.
    • Sable vest + fine turtleneck: a light layer with plenty of warmth, suitable even indoors.
    • Sable cape/stole: worn over evening dresses it stands out on its own; jewellery can be minimalist or statement.
    • Long coat: ideal for medium/tall heights; we balance proportions to keep both mobility and elegance.

    Personalisation & special orders

In our atelier we configure custom pieces (on standard models),
made to measure (1–2 fittings) and bespoke (2–4 fittings and a textile
prototype). We adjust length, fit on shoulders/bust/waist, collar and closure system. More details:
    custom fur coats.

    Care & lifespan

    • Store on a wide hanger, without any cover; avoid direct sunlight, UV light sources and heat – this way you can wear it for 40 years or more.
    • Do not apply perfume/solvents on the fur. If a stain appears, don’t rub, don’t wash – ask for advice.
    • Schedule Fur SPA every 2–6 years (depending on wear/shade) for rehydration and refresh.
    • For inherited pieces we offer restyling and repairs (lining replacement, cut adjustments, replacing worn pelts).

Want everyday robustness? See mink (vison).
Prefer airy volume and a fashion effect? fox.
Looking for rare pattern and contrast? lynx.
    For extreme softness: chinchilla.
